For many years I have been translating Gaelic songs for the choir and for people associated with the choir. I have made a point of making these translations literal rather than lyrical. This often has the effect of making the English text somewhat stilted. The advantage, however, is that the singer can get an idea of the meaning of each line and can see which words should be emphasised. In this way a more polished use of the Gaelic can be obtained and the singer (or conductor) can give a more accurate portrayal of the sense of the song.
