Our Conductor and Gaelic Tutor

Ar Stiùiriche agus Ar n-Oide Gàidhlig

Eilidh Johnson

Eilidh’s first job after gaining Dip.Mus.Ed at the RSAMD was as a peripatetic music teacher on Skye. She found that the children in the North end of the island did not have enough English and decided to learn Gaelic so that she could teach them in their own language.

She went on to enter the Mod competitions and won prizes for a collection of unpublished songs, an original song (music & words), a short story and an essay. She also won a prize for singing an unpublished song.

She left Skye and spent many years working with people with special needs and finally qualified as a Music Therapist. She married and spent twenty years in England.

When she returned to Scotland to look after her mother, she discovered that there were several Gaelic classes in North Ayrshire. She joined these and took great pleasure in resurrecting her knowledge of and love of the language and its music. She runs a small traditional singing group in Irvine.

Her unique combination of musical training and complete fluency in Gaelic make her an ideal Conductor and Gaelic Tutor for our Choir.
